I have learned to see material and in addition to seeing it for what it is, seeing what it can become. I believe that is a primary goal of art. To teach us to look past the surface of not just a piece of art, but also another person, and see not just what they are, but what they can become.
I appeared on two episodes of the TV show "Junkyard Wars". This was one of my first opportunities to really see scrap metal and make something new from it. Since there was a time limit and I was part of a team, it really emphasized working together to bring a complex vision to life.
